UMWdna_w. Dv. Qv. XYPe. RVn- o. Q@comcast. Leigh,Once you get all the OS & drivers installed, from the CD's that Dell provided to you. And you have installed or turned on the firewall for your laptop. You should the following. Go to Windows Update and install all the updates for XP SP2. Do Not install Hardware drivers, that may be offered by MS, but make a note of what they are offering, including version #, such as video, modem, network drivers, etc..
If you have MS Office or Works Suite bundled software, it might be good to install it now, then go to the MS Office site, and install any updates that are available for those products. If MS offered say a video upgrade, go to the Dell site and see what video upgrade that they are offering, and install it. This goes for any other drivers that are there. You may want to check the manufacturer's website and see if there is any updates for their hardware. But use common sense, if things are working fine with your laptop, it might be better not upgrade, until you really need it.
After installing any "bundled" software that came with the Dell CD's, look for any upgrades/patches that might be available from Dell. If you have some external hardware such as a printer, scanner, digital camera, microphone, etc.. You should check their sites, and see if there are any upgrade drivers for their hardware, or updates/patches for the software that originally came with it.
Go to the website of any software that you plan to reinstall on your laptop, and see if that there are any upgrades for it, especially your security type programs, such as antivirus, firewall, spyware, etc.. This may be the perfect time to review the software that you plan to reinstall on your laptop. If it is a program the you really don't use alot, or not at all. Consider not reinstalling it at this time, until you really need it.- - Rich/rerat(RRR News) < message rule> < < Previous Text Snipped to Save Bandwidth When Appropriate> > "Leigh" < lrcite@yaboohoowho. Reload OEM Dell Inspiron E1. XP - General Hardware - Laptop. Hello Chuck,This answer may be a little late but at least when it happensagain you could try this. You may not need to reinstall back to the original settings,as most computers slow up due to large amounts of unwanted and un- needed file’sor fragments, try this before doing the drastic reinstall,Download “Ccleaner” from the net, this isfreeware so won’t cost anything and install. After installation and initial analysis closethen reopen “Ccleaner”Hit the “Analyze” button, this may take a fewminutes to fully complete. When complete hit the “Run cleaner” button, follow steps 3 and 4 until nothing shows up after the analysis phase. Then go in to the “Registry” tab and hit the “Scanfor Issues” button, again this will take a few minutes, on completion hit the “Fix.
Selected Issues”, again do this a few times until the window is clear after a “Scanfor Issues”. This gets rid of all the unused registryentries that tell your computer to use various other files, and if yourcomputer can not find them it keeps searching, and this slows up your computer.
If you go on the net regularly or install then uninstall programmes on a regularbasis you will need to do this on a regular basis to keep your computer runningwell. Another problem is, the more programmes you have open at any one time, the more yourprocessor needs to do (keep check off) so it slows down, this is also the caseif you have loads of file icons on your desk top, try to keep these to a minimumperhaps grouping like files in folders and only have the most used out on thedesk top.
Hope this helps you and maybe some others that have the same problem. Always happy to help if I can.
